How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile for Local SEO

When a nearby customer searches for what you offer, the Google Business Profile (GBP) — formerly Google My Business — is usually the first thing they see. It appears in the Map Pack, on Google Maps, and in local search results. Optimizing it is the highest-ROI local SEO activity you can do, and it is completely free.

Why your Google Business Profile dominates local search

The Google Map Pack (the top three local results shown above organic listings) drives a disproportionate share of local search clicks. Appearing there depends heavily on three factors Google measures:

  • Relevance — how well your profile matches the searcher's query.
  • Distance — how close your business is to the searcher.
  • Prominence — how well-known and reputable your business is online.

You control relevance and prominence directly through your profile content and reviews.

Complete every field — no exceptions

An incomplete profile signals to Google (and customers) that your business is not actively managed. Complete every section:

  • Business name — use your real name; avoid keyword stuffing (Google penalizes it).
  • Categories — choose the most accurate primary category; add secondary categories only if genuinely relevant.
  • Address and service area — accurate and consistent with your website and citations.
  • Hours — keep them updated, including holidays.
  • Phone and website — use a local number and your real website URL.
  • Description — write a unique 750-character description using natural keywords.
  • Attributes — select all that apply (e.g. "women-led," "wheelchair accessible," "free Wi-Fi").

Add photos and posts regularly

Businesses with more photos receive significantly more direction requests and calls. Add:

  • Cover and logo images
  • Interior and exterior photos
  • Team and product photos
  • Updated photos monthly

Use Google Posts to share offers, events, and updates. Posts expire after a week or two, so publish fresh content regularly — this signals an active, managed business.

Earn and respond to reviews

Reviews are a top local search ranking factor. Ask happy customers to leave a review, and respond to every review — positive and negative. Responses show you are engaged and help with prominence signals.

A consistent stream of new reviews matters more than total count. Aim for a steady drip, not a sudden burst.

Keep information consistent everywhere

Your name, address, and phone number (NAP) must be identical across your website, Google Business Profile, social media, and local directories. Inconsistency confuses Google's local ranking algorithms.
