SEO Basics: On-Page Optimization That Moves the Needle

Search engine optimization can feel overwhelming, but 80% of the results come from getting the basics right. On-page SEO — the elements you control directly on your website — is the foundation. Here are the on-page optimization factors that genuinely affect your search ranking.

Title tags: the single most important on-page element

Every page needs a unique, descriptive title tag (55–60 characters). It appears in search results and in the browser tab. Include your primary keyword near the start and your brand at the end.

Good: "Plumber in Toronto | 24/7 Emergency Plumbing — ABC Plumbing" Bad: "Home"

Meta descriptions: your free ad in search results

Meta descriptions (150–160 characters) don't directly affect ranking, but they dramatically affect click-through rate, which does. Write a compelling description that includes your keyword and a reason to click.

Heading structure (H1, H2, H3)

  • One H1 per page, matching the title tag.
  • Use H2 and H3 to structure content logically.
  • Include keywords and variations naturally in headings.
  • Headings help Google understand your content and improve readability.

Image alt text

Every image needs descriptive alt text for two reasons: accessibility and image search. Describe the image naturally and include a keyword where relevant. Avoid keyword stuffing.

Internal linking

Link from your new content to your existing pages, and vice versa. Internal links help Google crawl your site and understand which pages are most important. Use descriptive anchor text — not "click here."

URL structure

Clean, descriptive URLs help users and search engines:

  • Good: /services/drain-cleaning
  • Bad: /p?id=12345

Indexing: make sure Google can see you

  • Verify your site in Google Search Console.
  • Submit an XML sitemap.
  • Check for manual actions or crawl errors.
  • Ensure important pages are not blocked by robots.txt.

Content quality: the foundation under the basics

Google's algorithms reward content that genuinely answers the searcher's question. Write for humans first:

  • Use the language your customers use.
  • Answer common questions directly.
  • Update content regularly.
  • Aim for depth and accuracy over keyword density.

Keyword stuffing no longer works and can hurt you. Use keywords naturally and focus on being genuinely useful.

Local SEO on-page elements

For local businesses, add:

  • Your city/region in title tags and headings where natural.
  • Your NAP in the footer on every page.
  • A location page for each service area.
  • Embedded Google Map on your contact page.
